ooh
I am planning an Emergency Kit party.

[EDIT: We probably have our 10 for May, and possibly an alternate. Next one will be in August. I will post then. I plan to do this quarterly or so. I think it's that important.]

How an Emergency Kit party works is this:

Ten people sign up.

I email each person a list of some of the items recommended for a one-person emergency/disaster preparedness kit (each person will get a different list, with cheap and less-cheap items on it). You decide which thing(s) you can afford to buy ten of to contribute to the project. You do this with the understanding that some of us will buy cheap stuff and some more expensive stuff.

Then we gather at my house and I provide us each with a large cooler or similar container to hold our kits in. Then we split up each of our items, and each person gets a copy of the whole list so they can add more stuff to their kits as they can.

Then we eat massive amounts of food, exchange emergency information (optional), and those who are neighbors to each other make readiness plans (optional).

I will use ready.gov as a reference.

The first Emergency Kit party will be some time in late May. If you want to be on the email list for planning, please let me know, and let me know how many people you will be representing (that is, if you're doing a kit for four people, even if only you will be in attendance, and you want to bring ten each of four things, that's fine, I just need to know so that the number of kits equals ten total.)

Count me in! The truth is, we're part of CERT and Fremont's Disaster Preparedness Committee so I really don't need a kit. But I'm very, very happy to contribute and come have food and stuff.

Awesome. Maybe you could make a kit and donate it to someone? Just a thought.

I love this idea, and wish I were closer so that the joining you part was feasible. ;)

Wonderful idea! I'm working on my own emergency preparedness kit at home.

emergency kits
What a great idea! I'm part of just about every emergency board or group in my immediate area (ambulance, fire, rescue, emergency management, whatever), but we haven't been doing this sort of grass-roots thing.

Let me know how it goes; I'd like to try something like it here.

Damn. This is a really good idea, but I don't think I can get it together to participate by late May. If you end up doing another one later, let me know.

I'm in, if "late in May" means after Memorial Day Weekend. I have some stuff already and am happy to buy/bring more. I would strongly suggest looking at some of the threads on this topic on Making Light, as well as ready.gov . Jim McDonald, who blogs at ML, is a paramedic and a Very Smart Man.

If "late May" also = "doesn't conflict with Platform Committee meetings", I'm in.

We may already have 10 for May. Would it be all right if I checked in with you in a day or two? (We're looking at May 29, 30, 31 as dates.)
