Okay, folks. The preliminary website for 42 Magazine is up. (It will be located at 42magazine.com soonish.) I'm very excited.

For those who don't know already, we're going to publish a print magazine in the spring of '09, celebrating meaning in life. This is something I've been dreaming about since [info]someotherguy's 42nd birthday, and now, with mine coming up, here it is.

Click here to see the call for submissions, which I've excerpted under the cut.

Whee! *bounce*

42 Magazine

Call for Submissions, updated August 28, 2008

Spring 2009 issue deadline is January 15, 2009

42 is a new quarterly print magazine seeking submissions for its inaugural, Spring 2009 edition. The editors invite submissions of articles, poems, and stories that illuminate the themes of a meaningful life, whatever that means to you. See below for details of what we are looking for, but don't be constrained by any lack of imagination on our part -- send us your work and give us a chance to love it.

Currently, 42 is accepting submissions via email only. Submission address is 42magazine@serenepages.com. Please include the word "submission" somewhere in the subject line to bypass our spam filters. In the future, these guidelines will be updated to include a postal mail submission address. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere. All rights revert to the author/artist. Please submit your written work in the BODY of your email; sending it as an attachment will slow response turnaround time. Standard response time is from five to ten business days.

Yes, this is a paying market. Yes, we plan to be picky. Yes, we also plan to encourage new and emerging writers and artists. We're all about the Yes around here.

We pay on publication. We don't pay a TON, but we pay. In addition, it's an innovative experiment in collaboration, so any profit we make (we don't expect to make a profit right away, or maybe ever, but hey, it's possible) will be divided among the people who make the magazine happen -- that is, the publishers AND the contributors -- through a point-based system. Everything you do to help birth this magazine earns you points, and your points earn you a piece of the pie, if there ever are enough pieces to go around.

Make sure you notify duotrope if you haven't already, and also Ralan's (Ralans is mostly a spec fic market listing, but it can't hurt, right?).

Oh - and definitely go you. :) I may or may not have sent you an email.

Hmmm.
Surprisingly, I think I have an idea for an article/photo-essay/illustarated type thing. I'll ping you offline to see if it's something that might work.

Art
Is art okay?

I'm working on some pretty neat tree branch paintings right now and my hope is that they are meaningful and uplifting.

So new there aren't any pictures up on my website yet....heh

I've posted a link to this in a few places, but I would note that your short description here doesn't mention the secular aspect, which seemed to be an emphasis elsewhere. Let me know if that's incorrect and I'll amend my posts accordingly.

It's in the guidelines, which I want folks to read before submitting, but yes, we're not addressing religion-based meaning in life.

(i'll submit a thing or two regardless of whether or not you do. :) yay for smart, literate magazines!)

I think a gardening column would be AWESOME! Let's see whatcha got.

:) would you like me to submit a straight column or a Q&A type thing like you're planning for some of the other subjects? (or a mix of both?)
[info]serenejournal wrote:

A straight column, please. If you think you'd like to do Q&A in the future, (and, of course, if we decide to publish your column), then we'll need to put a call for questions in the next call for submissions.

do you have a preference for whether it would be meaningfulness-of-gardening focused, practical-aspects-of-gardening focused, or a blend of the two? or should i just write whichever i'm inspired to write? :)

i'm looking forward to submitting! :)

Gosh, I thought I'd answered you earlier; sorry! I'm leaning towards a mixture, but yes, do whatever you're inspired to write. If gardening brings meaning to your life, and I feel it does, then that's what I want you writing about.
